407. Born in Würtemburg, Germany, Joseph Decker (1853 - 1924) moved to the United States at the age of fourteen. He first worked as a commercial artist, designing signs for food trucks and sporting clubs, and acquired his technical polish at the National Academy of Design and the Munich Academy. Decker exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Brooklyn Art Association, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Today his work is featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. This painting is owned by the Birmingham Museum of Art, Birmingham, Alabama.

408. Samuel Isham (1855--1914) was an American portrait and figure painter, born in New York. He graduated from Yale in 1875 and studied law, but after being admitted to the bar he turned to art and studied in Paris at the Académie Julian. He exhibited at both Paris salons and at the larger American exhibitions, and became a member of the National Academy in 1906. His most important achievement, however, was his History of American Painting (New York, 1905), the best work on the subject at that time. The below three oils are part of the outstanding collection of the Janesville Art League, Janesville, Wisconsin.

409. The State Historical Society of Iowa is the owner of the below portraits. The sitters are Josiah Bushnell Grinnell, an abolitionist minister, and his wife. The male portrait is signed by J. N. Parks while the female image is unsigned but probably by Parks as well.

410. Indian scenes are highly prized. This oil depicts an Indian encampment. The piece is from the collection of the Wilmette Historical Society, Wilmette, Illinois. Considerable work will be required to return the painting to its best appearance.
