26. After completing two paintings for the Oregon Public Library (Page 3, Number 14), the director sent in this large (H. 36" X W. 48") oil-on-canvas landscape entitled, "October--Oregon, Illinois 1918." The image was painted by Charles Francis Browne (1859-1920), one of the founding members of the Eagle's Nest Art Colony. Browne was regarded as the finest landscape artist in the Colony. He was the brother-in-law of Lorado Taft and studied with Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. This majestic landscape is one of Browne's last paintings. It won a Silver Medal at the 1918 Chicago Society of Artists exhibition. Browne was stricken with paralysis at the age of 60 and died one year later.

27. The University of Illinois has an outstanding collection of works by Edgar Britton. (See page 3, No.12.) Britton was born in 1901 and died in 1982. His magical and haunting "Self-Portrait as a Clown" is pictured on the left. The oil-on-canvas painting measures H. 36" X W. 32" and is signed and dated 1947. The image on the right is by Leon Kroll entitled, "Between Rehearsals." (H. 41" X W. 27") Kroll was born in New York City in 1884. He first studied at the Art Students' League with John Twachtman. (See page 2, No.10.) He then went on to study at the Academie Julien in Paris. His paintings were always shaped by an interest in realism often tempered by the subject matter of the French Impressionists. These influences are clearly depicted in this painting although here Kroll plays with our understandings of the perfectly poised and posed image of a dancer. The unbalanced, awkward pose of his dancer is reiterated in the unbalanced perspective where the viewer looks straight in to the figures and yet down on the floor presenting a most unsteady composition.

28. In 1914 attorney and historian Clarence Burton donated his historical papers to the Detroit Public Library. In 1921 he brought together other local historians to create the Detroit Historical Society. The museum was originally housed on the 23rd floor of a local building. It took another thirty years until the museum had its own separate building dedicated to the preservation of the city's rich history. The two oil-on-canvas marine paintings represented here are from the museum's extensive Great Lakes Marine Painting Collection.

29. This "Portrait of President Harding" is owned by the Ohio Historical Society. The painting has suffered severe damage. The canvas is torn and paint loss has occurred. In order to repair the damage, a new canvas will be attached to the back of the original using a reversible conservation adhesive. This lining technique will serve to strengthen the weakened original support and consolidate all areas of loose paint. When completed, proper filling and in-painting will return the portrait to its best appearance.
