206. Sven Birger Sandzén is classified as a Post-Impressionist and is in fact one of the few artists of this movement to extensively practice the style in the United States. He was born in Sweden in 1871, At the age of 23, he left Sweden to study in Paris. Later the same year he accepted a teaching position at Bethany College, a liberal arts institution in Lindsborg, Kansas. Today the artist is recognized as a significant figure in the development of modernism in America in the early decades of the twentieth century. Sandzén died in 1954. The right image is owned by Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois.

207. The Lincoln Library and Museum, Springfield, Illinois is the owner of the below portraits. The oval portrait of "Lt. James Smith" is reminiscent of the earlier treated Civil War portrait on Page 29. The right "Portrait of Abraham Lincoln" was completed by William Cogswell (1819-1903). Cogswell was a self-taught artist who rose to great fame. His best-known work is the portrait of Lincoln, which now hangs in the White House. It was Grant who selected the portrait for the White House. Cogswell also painted a portrait of Grant that now hangs in the U.S. Senate. A painting by Cogswell was treated previously on this site on Page 26. for the Wisconsin State Historical Society, Madison, Wisconsin.

208. The Spertus Museum of Judaica has an outstanding collection of fine art as well as ceremonial artifacts. Two of the below four oils are by Todros Geller (1889-1949). Geller was born in the Ukraine of Russia. In 1906, when he was seventeen years old, he immigrated with his family to Montreal, Canada. There he studied art, married and then moved to Chicago in 1918. He continued his art studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and became a leading artist within the city's art community. He was a source of inspiration to others, including Aaron Bohrod and Mitchell Siporin. Geller's works are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Lazar Krestin (1868 - 1938) was born in Kovno, Lithuania and studied in Vienna. He worked in Munich, Vienna and Odessa before emigrating to Palestine. He achieved fame in the German art world for genre scenes and his many sober portraits.

209. Arthur John Elsley (1860-1952) is the artist of this charming scene. During the middle of the nineteenth century, genre paintings with domestic life subjects became popular in England..The new affluent middle class favored in particular genre paintings that depicted scenes of children with their pets in playful settings. Arthur John Elsley was one of the most popular English artists who depicted such scenes in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. During his career, Elsley exhibited 52 works at the Royal Academy from 1878 until 1927, and many more at other major exhibition halls throughout England. The pictured oil is from the collection of the St. Charles Public Library, St. Charles, Illinois.
           
           


           
210. John Noble (1874 - 1935) is known for his paintings of the Texas plains, done while working for his father driving longhorn cattle up the Chisholm Trail, and in addition, he did commercial work as a draftsman and cartoonist. He was especially noted for his landscape paintings around Provincetown, Massachusetts. Noble was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1874 and was raised on the Osage Reservation in Oklahoma. He received his first formal training at the Cincinnati Academy of Fine Arts. His works are represented in the Phillips Collection, the Whitney Museum, the High Museum, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. These two oils are owned by the Wichita Center for the Arts.
