523. These two oils are by Guy Brown Wiser who was born in 1895 in Marion, Indiana. He traveled to Paris to study with Jean Despujols, stayed in Paris for almost two years, and when he returned to the United States he attended art classes at Ohio State University. In 1934 he moved to Los Angeles and between 1935 and 1957 he illustrated close to 80 books for different publishing companies. Wiser's figurative paintings of the 1930s are reminiscent of his teacher Jean Despujols; they often depict the utopian images found in Art Deco paintings. Wiser died in Fallbrook, California, on March 30, 1983. The left oil depicts his sister, Gertrude Wiser Butcher, who was also an artist. These paintings are from the collection of the South Bend Museum of Art, South Bend, Indiana.

525. The Scholte House, Pella, Iowa, built in the winter and spring of 1847-1848, was the fulfillment of a promise Dominie Hendrik Scholte made to his wife Mareah to alleviate her homesickness and disappointment. He had promised to build her a house with all the comforts of the home she had left in The Netherlands. The last Scholte descendant to live in the house was Leonora Gaass Hettinga. She gave the house to the Pella Historical Society in 1979 for use as a museum. The collection includes numerous paintings by one of Iowa's greatest artists, G. H. Nollen.
