|
| Since opening Barry Bauman
Conservation, I have had an opportunity to work on many fine
historical paintings. To date, over two-hundred have received
treatment at no charge including works by Van Dyck, Magnasco,
ter Borch, Bouguereau, Twachtman, Gifford, Robinson, and Tanner.
This list now includes John Singer Sargent, arguably America's
finest portrait artist. The following study reviews the historical
context of his "Portrait of General Lucius Fairchild,"
its conservation treatment and examines a Civil War hero who,
at one time, was one of the most powerful men in America. |
